Welcome from the Headteacher
Headteacher's message

Welcome to the Whitby Community College website.

We are a ‘local’ College, serving an area which is geographically large but socially close-knit. We strive to provide the widest possible range of opportunities for our learners, both young and more mature. We take students in at 14, at the start of GCSE courses, and the majority stay into the Sixth Form. At any given time, we have 800 full time students on roll.

Our technology specialism is reflected in the curriculum offer– Design Technology, Engineering, ICT, Electronics, Psychology and Cisco industry-standard qualifications appear alongside the more traditional Science subjects.

However, our curriculum has strengths beyond technology, with excellent provision in the visual and performing arts and a host of other subjects, including vocational and work related areas.

I hope you find our website an interesting and enjoyable introduction to the College, and that you will contact us with any further enquiries.

Mr K Prytherch

By the time you read this I’m sure you will have already heard our fantastic news. We were fully inspected by Ofsted on 9th and 10th April 2008 and will be taken out of the ‘Notice to Improve’ category within the next couple of weeks; as soon as the final report is approved. Even more pleasing is that this report should say we are better than being satisfactory and that the majority of work is good. You will be able to read the full report via the Ofsted website by the end of April; if you would like me to send home a paper copy please do ask.
I would now like to publicly thank various groups of people.

1. Thank you to every single pre16 student for the effort you have put into your work this year. The inspectors were particularly impressed with your good behaviour.
2. Thank you to all post 16 students for sticking with the college and having faith in us all. It would have been easy to run away when some people were suggesting we could never achieve this type of success. When our report is published you should find that our 6th form gradings are better than Yorkshire Coast College and Scarborough 6th Form College and almost identical to Prior Pursglove—well done.
3. Thank you to all parents and governors who have supported the work of the College in a huge number of ways; especially those who actively challenged the occasional and unfair criticism aimed at us.
4. Finally, I would like to thank every member of staff for their amazing amount of work over the last 3 years and the improvements they have made. To go on record I also want to thank the 28 members of staff observed by inspectors; none were graded as being inadequate and the majority were graded as good or better.

I can assure you that this is not the end of something, it is the beginning of our journey towards excellence. We are not complacent, everyone who works with me is critical of our work and we aim to make continuous improvement; with your continued help and support we can create a college to be even more proud of.
I can also report to you that our ‘School Improvement Partner’ visited us recently and wrote a complimentary report and our ‘Investors in People’ status has been extended as well.

Please remember my door is always open to you should you have anything to discuss.

With very best wishes

Keith Prytherch
