8 schools in North Yorkshire have been partnered with a group of schools in the Hambantota region of Sri Lanka, on the South East coast of the country. Whitby Community College has begun a partnership with Beliatta Central College, an 11-19 school in Hambantota.
This is a really exciting project that all students are invited to become involved in. A group of students, the ‘Global Schools Action Group’ have been writing to and receiving letters from students in Sri Lanka and planning future projects between the two schools.
The Aims and Vision are:
• To build a sustainable relationship between our schools
• To promote friendship and understanding between students, staff and the wider community
• Through projects, to make students aware of the concepts of the Global Dimension
• To find ways to link the curriculum of Whitby Community College and Beliatta Central College
• To promote mutual trust and respect
In September, Charith Danthanarayana who is the link teacher from Beliatta Central College spent a week in Whitby CC where he worked with teachers and students in planning joint curriculum projects and collecting resources to take back to Sri Lanka.
These projects are planned so that students are given the opportunity to look at things with a global dimension, and our partnership is focussing on the themes of Sustainability, Diversity and Global Citizenship.
A cricket and dance festival is planned for July 2009, which will give all students the opportunity to visit the beautiful country of Sri Lanka and our College’s partner school. More information about this will be coming soon!
